The Story Behind the Pictures

My crazy, silly life...

This happened a few weeks ago on a Friday. It was any other day and I was driving in my car to find a place to take outfit pictures. I was about 10 blocks from my apartment when I saw this cute white picket fence and decided to take pictures by it. I left my phone inside my car, and as I locked the car and shut the doors I realized in my stupidity that I had also locked my keys in the car. Not to mention the fact that my wallet and purse was also inside the car. All I had was my camera and my tripod. It was about 4:00 and I was supposed to go with my roommates to sign a contract for the place we're living at next year at 4:30. Problem? Yes. So I wasn't in a super great mood to take pictures, having locked everything I needed in my car. I was right by a house, but because of technology these days, I didn't have any of my roommates phone numbers memorized. So with tripod and digital camera in hand, I proceeded to walk the ten miles back to my apartment.

It actually wasn't that cold, almost warm and the walk took about 20 minutes, so it really wasn't bad. My roommate Katie was thankfully home when I told her the news. She (and most of my rooomates) has a car so we drove back to my car, taking a fly swatter and some other tool with us. My car's an explorer, so there's a window in the trunk door that comes up on it's own. There was a little unlock button just inside the door that if we could get the fly swatter in and maneuver it to push down on the button we'd be golden. Unfortunately, there wasn't enough leverage using the fly swatter to push down on the button. It was about 4:30 and we had to go sign the contracts. But...my cash for the deposit was in my wallet, which was in my car (I know, I know)!!

So Katie offered to just write a check for my deposit and then I could pay her back with the cash. We went to the apartment signing, and the lady was actually okay with me just bringing the cash on Monday so it worked out. We went back to our apartment and found some flowers on the doorstep. There was no note, but there was a clearance sticker on the flowers saying they'd been bought for $2.50. We tried figuring it out and the flowers weren't given to my roommates who had boyfriends. The flowers were a mystery.

And I was super stressed. The thing was, I was supposed to go on a date at 6:00, but I had nothing! What if my date needed to text me or something? I tried calling BYU Police to see if they could unlock me from my car (they did it for my mom and I once...though that's another story) but they can only do it if your car is on campus. So I called the Provo Police, who told me very rudely that they don't even have tools to break into cars. By this time I was freaking out (it may have been an emotional time in the month for me as well...) because a locksmith would be too much money. I messaged my date on facebook asking if we could leave at 7:00 instead, because I was a mess and still had to do my makeup and I wanted a chance to back to my car and try breaking into it again. I called my mom from Heidi's phone and was just bawling (emotional time of month, remember) and my date hadn't replied to the facebook message yet. So I got my bearings together, redid my make-up and made myself look cute. I also sent my date another message telling him to disregard the one I had sent before, just in case he read it right before he left.

Important fact: We still did not know who the flowers came from.

Well, 6:00 rolled around and he wasn't there. 6:05, 6:10. Still no date. So of course, speculations started and they had to do with the flowers. This was the conclusion that we came up with. My date was the one that brought the flowers earlier. He brought them because he had to cancel last minute on the date, so that's why the flowers had no note and why there was a clearance sticker on them. But because we weren't home, he just dropped them off at the doorstep and then texted/called me. I just didn't get any texts because I didn't have my phone. By 6:30, I figured he wasn't coming. My roommates were going with our friend Bryan to a photography exhibit, so going along with the flower theory, which at this point, I believed to be 100% true, I went with them, and then we'd go look at my car after. The exhibit would just be closing soon so we had to go there first.

On our way to the event, we called my roommate Talya to ask her to put a note on the door, just in case my date did come so he'd know where I was and that I hadn't just ditched him. Just to make sure. The exhibit was great, here's a link to what it was about (just so I don't make this post longer than it already is). After the exhibit, we went to my car but by that time it was about 8:00 and it was too dark to see anything so we had to go back to our apartment to get a flashlight. I also checked my facebook and he had messaged back just asking if I'd gotten my keys and phone, but said nothing else. So now I was very confused.

We went back to my car, and finally, with a lot of work and using the fly swatter, we got the car unlocked! I looked at my phone and had a few missed calls and texts. Oh dear.

6:02   Hey I'm on my way, what's your apartment number?
6:15   Missed call
6:25   I think I'm here, is it called the ___? (sorry, don't wanna give out too much info)
6:50   Missed call

Wow, I felt SO bad. Seriously. I mean, I did everything I could to try and contact him, but I felt really bad. By this time it was about 8:30 and I called him right away. I told him sorry a bajillion times and said we could still go on the date or we could just postpone for another time, whatever worked for him. We ended up going on the date and had a fun time. This was his side of the story: He did not bring the flowers and obviously from the texts he didn't have my apartment number (I thought I gave it to him, but turns out I didn't, oops) so he didn't know where I lived. He waited for a little bit and then figuring something must have been wrong, he went to his friend's house and checked his facebook. He saw the message and then his friend suggested he just go back to my complex and start knocking on doors until he found mine. Then he found the note (see, it was good!) and things started to come together after that.

Moral of story? NEVER lock my keys or my phone in my car again. Obviously. But really, they are always going to be with me, I'm super paranoid now!

And in case you made it all the way to the end of this story...no, we never found out who gave us the flowers. Though they really messed things up for that date. Goodness gracious!

The end.

Life, the Future, and Other Adult-ish Things :)

I guess I’m posting today! These pictures were actually taken back in October and upon finding them today I thought, why not do a post? I haven’t been wearing anything super cute for the past week or so—it’s been sweaters and t-shirts for me! Not to mention unwashed hair and less makeup on my face. :P Eh, but enough about that!

I’ve been thinking a lot about what I want to do in life after I graduate. People are always asking, “So what are you going to do once you finish school?” And my answer is “Umm…I don’t really know. Ha ha… but maybe something with fashion because I’m super interested in that? We’ll see.” Watch, just ask me and this is the answer I’ll tell you. People ask college students this type of question ALL the time! It’s kind of annoying but we all do it. I mean, it’s a legitimate question. The thing is, one of the reasons I don’t have any plans for my future is because it’s almost always impossible to make plans. Life is always changing, and we are always changing. There’s so much out there? I don’t want to decide one thing I want to do in my life after I graduate and then realize later that I missed out on so much!

Here’s the other thing. At BYU, marriage is a huge thing. Yep. There’s almost this stigma here that if you graduate and you’re not married, welp, then you better either serve a mission, go to grad school, or find a job in Provo so that you can get married. If you don’t do any of those things, then you’re a failure because you’re not married. Ridiculous. Maybe my description of that is a little extreme, but for the most part it’s very accurate and realistic. I’m not dissing marriage, not at all! I want to get married and I can’t wait to meet the guy and spend the rest of my eternity with the one of love (I know it’s not as easy as that but you get the point). I just don’t know when it’s going to happen and I don’t want to wait around for it. For so long, I’ve just really hoped that I’d get married before I graduated because otherwise I just wouldn’t know what to do with my life.

But now I realize how completely and utterly wrong that is. Marriage is such an adventure in and of itself and I’m so excited to live that adventure when it comes. But until that time, there are so many other adventures to do! I can do anything! Life has so many possibilities and I don’t want to let them pass up.

So what am I going to do? Well what I’m definitely going to stop doing is waiting around to get married. I’m going to stop going to places thinking, “Oh maybe my eternal companion will be here!” I’m going to live my life, because marriage will happen when it’s going to happen and I’m not going to sit around and wait for it. So what am I going to do with my life? What am I going to do after I graduate?

Well, this summer I don’t want to stay in Utah. I’m going to find a lot of fashion internships and apply to them all. I’m also going to look into nanny jobs because I adore kids and would love to nanny if an internship doesn’t work out. If neither of those work out then I may go live with some relatives in Boston and experience a life in the eastern US.

And after I graduate? The opportunities are endless. I want to join the Americorps for a year. Maybe I’ll work for an airline so that I can fly places for free. Maybe I’ll go find another fashion internship or nanny. I don’t completely know. And guess what? That’s really okay. I don’t have to know everything, I just have to keep going on the right path. Oh yeah, and along the way if I get married…well, that would be pretty okay too. J

Being Happy Now

Welp, it's Friday. Thank goodness! I get to go home for the weekend and go to two receptions, one of which Katri talked about. I also get to see Kung Fu Panda 2 (sorry, the other day I said it was Cars 2, my bad ha) for free before it comes out! Yeah baby! I loooove receptions and free movies. I can't wait to show you the dress I'm wearing today. :)

Anyways, you what really stinks sometimes? Being single. Yeah. I am going to say now that I've never kissed anyone or had a boyfriend. :( And sometimes it's okay, but most of the time, it can be really hard, because here in Provo, it seems like everyone is in a relationship, engaged, married, or breaking up. Ugh! It's so frustrating! I guess I just want it to be my turn. Is there anyone else out there in my same position? All the single ladies? ;) I guess the lesson I'm trying to learn through all of this is how to be happy where I'm at. Because I know that if I'm not happy now being single, then I'm not going to be happy if/when I date someone. I've been learning a lot lately that life could be absolutely wonderful and everything could be going right, but if you aren't happy with yourself, then you're not going to be happy. And that's a fact. So my goal is to be happy right now in my current situation. I'll keep you updated. Until then...happy Friday!

Prom! (Part 2)

So here it is, the post you've all been waiting for. . . Prom!!! I know its taken me a while, but believe me when I say I wasn't slacking. I've just been waiting for some other pictures, but I'm just going to post this anyway since I'm not sure when I'm going to get them.

Ok so first, the day activity. When Doug came to pick me up, it was so sweet. He brought me flowers! I thought it was way cute and nice. After, we went to go and meet everyone at one person's house. There were about twelve couples in my group, which is HUGE by the way, and all of them were SENIORS! And Doug and I are juniors, so I really didn't know a lot of people in our group. We went up to this one kid's cabin in Morgan to go shooting (at clay pidgeons, which for the record, I thought were shaped like real pidgeons, the birds) and make pizza. It turned out to be soooooo much fun. Even though I didn't know the people in my group well, I got to know them better and had a great time. I was really grateful for the day activity for this reason. Shooting was fun, but I wasn't very good; I could barely hold up the rifle! (and I didn't shoot anything) Our pizzas turned out pretty good too. We also played psychiatrist and just talked and screwed around a lot. It was fun, but I was way exhausted when I got home!

On the day of prom, I went over to one of my friend's houses and she did my hair in a way cute updo. I was way happy that she didn't instead of me having to pay to do it somewhere else. It was way nice of her too, because she had to do her own hair and her sister's too. Here is a picture of my lovely hair:
My mom had to help me get into my dress, because she had to alter it because it was so immodest at first and so it was a little complicated to get into. I also had to wake her up at midnight when I got home so she could help me get out, which I'm sure she was thrilled about :) When Doug came to pick me up, we put the boutonnière and corsage on each other like you're supposed to.
And then my parents took lots and lots of pictures like good parents should (haha, jk).
After we left, we went to the Mandarin, a nice Chinese restaurant. You ordered family style, so each of us ordered a dish and then shared it all. Doug and I shared our dishes with another couple and I found it funny that me and the other girl ordered the most popular dishes and the boys got stuff that no one wanted.

After dinner, we went to temple square and walked around a little bit. A lot of people asked us if we were going to a wedding. It was kind of funny. Then it was off to the Capitol for Prom!!!

When we got there, there was a huge line for pictures and we waited forever to take all of our pictures. My group was way big so it was a little hard to get the group picture done with all of us fitting in it. When our picture finished, everyone in line cheered. It was hilarious! :) Then we danced a lot and got snacks every once in a while. It was so packed, though. Doug and I tried doing some dances we'd learned from our Social Dance class, but it was too crowded to do anything. It seemed like the whole school was there! I saw tons of my friends so it was pretty cool. We left the dance at about 11:00 (it ended at 11:30) and then went to one boy's house for root beer floats. When Doug dropped me off, nothing dramatic really happened. After all we're just friends and I don't think I'd ever be able to like him like that. We just hugged and I thanked him for the night and everything.

Overall, it was LOTS and LOTS of fun! I had a blast at everything and I am soooooooo glad that I got a chance to go! Again, sorry that it's so late, but you know how life goes sometimes. :)
