How to Study Like a Boss

As you can see from the above photo, I get SUPER distracted when writing a paper or studying for finals. It's always really hard for me to concentrate. Why? Well, because most of the stuff that I study is on the computer and the computer has the internet, which has facebook, email, pinterest, blogger....see what I mean? I find myself writing a paper and then clicking that little Chrome browser button and 15 minutes later I'm still wasting time. This time when finals came around though, I was prepared! I've come up with some strategies for myself that I'll share with you too! I hope some of these help.

1. Give yourself time limits. I think the biggest thing for me when I'm studying for a big test or writing a paper, is that I get way overwhelmed that I can't even get myself to start. So I finally figured this out, but set time limits! My phone's always right beside me so I set a timer for 15 minutes. I have to write a certain amount (a reasonable amount but still challenging) or study a certain amount by the time the timer is up. And during that time, I can't text (because if I get a text, to read it I have to get out of the timer, which is a no-no) or browse the internet or do anything distracting. And it's only 15 minutes so it's easily doable! Once the timer is up, I can text someone back or go check my email or facebook. But I check it really quick and then do another timer. This works really well because it's manageable time and truly actually get stuff done! It's like a compromise with myself haha. And seriously before you know it, you'll be finished.

2. Listen to music. But isn't music distracting, you say? Well yeah, if you're listening to music that you can jump around and dance to or even music that you can sing along to. I'm not suggesting you listen to classical music, because that's boring for most of us. I've actually been listening to movie scores this whole weekend like from the Hunger Games, Harry Potter (of course), Disney movies, and others. I like movie scores because there are no words to sing along to and distract you, but your imagination is still active because the music puts images into your head and reminds you of different movies you've seen. I have a lot of scores on my iTunes library, but you can also just go to Pandora and make a station. Either write in something like "Harry Potter movie score," or write a famous score-writer. Some of the famous ones are Alan Menken (Disney), John Williams, Hans Zimmer, John Newton Howard (Hunger Games), Alexandre Desplat (HP & Deathly Hallows).

3. Have snacks! This is pretty self-explanatory, but just give yourself something to much on while studying. I looooove eating pretzel M&Ms but that's not the healthiest. Some fruit would be good or chips and salsa or guacamole. I do like having candy with me when I study though, it's my favorite snack for that! And also, make sure not to skip meals or let yourself go without when you're doing homework. It's just as important if not more important during stress times to have three meals a day so that you can concentrate well. If your delirious from having no food, you're not going to be able to study well at all, with these tips or without.

4. Make a list of stuff you want to do. Whenever I'm studying, I would basically rather be doing anything else and I can always come up with a justification to make that thing more important than school. Usually it's really random stuff too, like "Oh, I need to make cookies right now!" or "I should write my missionary friend a letter," or "I need to fix that dress!" or even, "Oh yeah, I need to find that person on facebook." It's all different, but it's important to remember that those things can be done later, and right now, studying needs to happen. So open up another document on Microsoft Word, and whenever one of those ideas pops into your head, write it down in that document, save it, and go back to your homework. So that when you are done studying and actually have time for real life, you can go back to that list and see what you needed/wanted to do. Plus, chances are that half that list will be erased, because you were only going to do them anyways to not do homework.

5. If you are really tired, sleep. There is nothing to cure sleep, and if you cannot possibly keep your eyes open, go to sleep! Our bodies need it and they don't function properly when they're super tired. If you're trying to stay up really late to finish, just go to sleep and wake up early instead. I've found that works way better for me sometimes. All I know is that I can't fight my body on sleep forever. If I need it, I've got to do it, no questions asked.

6. Find your study place. Where do you study best? Library, at home, in your bed, in a bookstore? For me, it's my bed. I'm comfortable and I can have whatever I need around me. When I'm really tired I'll go downstairs in our apartment because it's colder, but usually my bed works. If I'm getting super distracted at home by roommates and such then I will end up going to the library, but that doesn't happen too often since I have pretty studious roommates. :)

7. Stay Focusd. Nope, no typo. If you have Chrome as your web browser, I would highly recommend getting this app. Basically, it gives you a certain amount of time on the websites that you choose and once the time's up, it blocks that website until the end of the day. Genius right? So say your limit is half an hour for facebook every day, well once you reach that, it blocks facebook and you can't get on anymore. One thing that is also really great is that you can make it so it will block all the internet on your browser for a certain amount of time. Last week I was writing a paper so I had it block everything for two hours so that I could finish. If you have Chrome (which you should because it is pretty much the best) then you should use this. I love it!

8. Budget your time. This is similar to the setting time limits one but different. Sometimes, I have to write a paper by midnight because that's when I go to bed, and I'm done with the day at 3, so I think "Oh wow, I have nine hours to write my paper, that's plenty of time!" How many of us do this? And then we get to about 7-8:00 and wonder where the time went and start freaking out. Well you know how we are always being told to budget our money or we'll just spend it all on unimportant stuff? Time is basically the same thing: we must budget it or we will spend it all on unimportant stuff. So within the hour, decide what you will do. It's 2:00 so what will you do from 2:00-3:00? How much will you get done? Instead of looking at how much time you have total, look at it hour by hour and prioritize it, get your homework done first and eat lunch and dinner and then see what you can do. It will make worlds of difference for how you use your time.

I feel like I should have ten points on this list, but I can't think of anymore so eight it is! Now I've got to get back to my studying so good luck everyone and have a great week! :)
(this is probably how most people are feeling during finals week haha...CRAZY!)

Finals Week Recap

Wow it was a super busy week! Why? Because it was finals week! Talk about crazy. Usually I really love finals week because there are no classes so all your time can be devoted to studying and you can still have extra time to relax. But I was so excited for the week to be done. It was a busy week and I feel like I was studying so much. Thank goodness it's over, seriously. I had three finals and I think I did pretty well on them (though two had essays so I don't know the grade I got) and on my very last final I hadn't even studied for it that much and I got a 90%! Boo ya! ;)

Last Sunday was a lot of fun and I feel like I got to bond with my roommates a lot. We mostly just spent the day at home talking and such. We had a lot of clothes that all of us wanted to get rid of but we decided to have a clothing swap with it all and then get rid of it! It was fun, and we each walked away with a few cute things. Haha and we have yet to take the rest of the pile in our corner to DI.
After we had cleaned most of the clothes up
While we were going through the stuff, my roommate Olivia found this red hair semi-permanent dye stuff so we decided to all dye pieces of our hair that night. It was kind of crazy but a lot of fun. Unfortunately, mine didn't show up but everyone else's looked pretty cool. I'd have to bleach my hair if I ever wanted to really dye my hair I'd have to bleach it and I will never do that. Plus I love my hair anyways! (though some red in it would have looked sweet!)
haha I love this picture!
Never fear, I did not actually wear that dress to church or anything. I got it a while ago from DI with the intention to refashion it but it just didn't work out, so I put it on because I didn't care if it got dirty.

On Monday we still had FHE and made our semesterly "lucky testing center shirts." The only people in our group that showed up was our apartment, probably because everyone else was studying, but we did it anyways. We buy men's v-neck shirts from walmart (in a package) and then put tape on them for whatever design we want and then spray paint them in the campus parking lot across the street! We've left our mark on BYU because if you go look you can see spray paint marks in this one spot in the parking lot. I didn't get a picture of everyone's shirt, but here's mine:

Here's a picture from last year in winter semester when we started the tradition:

The rest of the week was spent at home doing whatever or studying (mostly studying, don't worry!). However, I did get to make some yummy treats , because I had to give myself some nice breaks somehow! On Monday I made a Peanut Butter cheeseball (both recipes came from pinterest of course) that was sooo good! You eat it with graham crackers or apples and you have to keep it in the freezer or it'll get too soft. It's very rich too so it's a nice thing to have when I'm craving something sweet because I'll just have a little and then feel like it's enough. The recipe is here if you want to make it! Pictures below taken by me. :)

On Wednesday I made some "reindeer" to give to my work friends for Christmas. They're nutter butters covered in chocolate with chocolate chips for eyes, a pretzel for the antlers, and a red hot for the nose. They were so cute and even more delicious! Man they need to come out with some chocolate covered Nutter Butters so that I can buy them all the time! Because they were yummy in my tummy. :) Recipe here, and once again, pictures by me.

Friday night I finished my last final and then watched Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 with some people in our ward (one of my friends had never seen it before! We changed that right away). I love that movie so much, I get emotional every time I watch. Huge Harry Potter fan right here...but you knew that :)

Saturday I was planning on going home, but due to some turn of events I stayed in Provo instead. I went to work from 10-2 and then went to the mall to hang out with my aunt Zildy while she face painted at the Princess Festival store (I did it for the last two weeks because she couldn't). I did some shopping and got a very warm hat from American Eagle because I had a $10 off card and also some cute boots from Rue 21. Then I left the mall and did some shopping for my friend who's on a mission--I was putting together a Christmas package for her--and then came home. All of my roommates were gone so it was just me, so I just watched some tv, sketched some designs, and pretty much had a me day. I could have gone out and been social but it felt nice to just be with myself all day. Heidi came home that night so then I didn't have to sleep in the apartment alone.

Sunday we went to church, where there were like 3 wards combined and there were probably only about 30 people there (and then a bunch left after sacrament so there were less). There were only like 8-10 people left in our apartment complex because everyone else had gone home for the break so we all decided to have dinner. One guy had a pre-made lasagna that he just had to heat, Heidi and I made delicious peanut butter truffle brownies, and there was also an assortment of drinks, garlic bread, spaghetti squash, and apples. Yum, it was very good and it was a lot of fun!

Then I sketched some more designs after that and watched the Grinch later that night with my friend Sergio. And that was my week! I'm still in Provo because I have to work but I get to go home Wednesday and can't wait! Christmas is in 6 DAYS!! EEE! Soooo excited :)

Back So Soon?

Okay, you can say it...I'm a terrible blogger. I know, no warning, just a disappearance for a week and a half! That is definitely inexcusable behavior! I have been pretty busy with finals and just pretty stressed so that I haven't really been wearing blog-worthy outfits. And also, my tripod broke and it's been raining so I haven't really had motivation to go outside and take pictures. And I know, these are all kind of lame excuses, and I'm sorry. :( I really want to try and blog every day though and take pictures a lot, but at least post something every day. Also another problem with me is that I tend to be a very all or nothing person. So if I stop blogging one day, it's easier to not blog the next, and then the next, and so forth...it's a terrible thing. Really you should be pretty proud of me for doing this blog for this long, because it means that I truly do like it! Otherwise I would have quite ages ago haha.

But guess what?! I've been refashioning lots of stuff and it's been sooo fun! I refashioned a shirt this morning that was inspired from a shirt Selena Gomez was wearing in a Wizards of Waverly Place episode (Daddy's Little Girl).
I saw this shirt and LOVED it and decided I'd do a refashion. I found a striped shirt at a thrift stored that looked like this...
And then I changed it to this... (NERD ALERT! I just took these pictures and I'm wearing glasses and no makeup and I really don't like the way I look in these. I don't like my glasses at all..but I guess you get to see them! Ha and I'm wearing the same pj shorts as I did this morning..funny)
I cut the neck part to be bigger and I cut the bottom to be a little shorter..not huge changes so you can't tell a ton.
I was going to cut the sleeves to be shorter, either 3/4 or short sleeved, but it was cold today so for now I left them long. Probably later I'll cut them shorter since it'll be warmer weather when I want to wear it again.

Sorry for the unedited photos! And also, I wore this shirt with jeans, a butterfly necklace, and brown boots, I just didn't take pictures. Don't worry, I don't walk around outside in those shorts! I'm modest..promise!! ;)

And now, I will go back to studying. Today is my last day of finals! Yay!!! And then I'll just be playing with friends all week and going home on the weekend for Easter. And also I will continue blogging. This girl is back in the house!! Oh and thank you all for your wonderful comments while I was away! It meant soooo much to me. I seriously thought if I didn't post then absolutely no one would read (like I said, I'm very all or nothing..) so it made me happy to still get comments. Thank you SO MUCH! :D

Life is LoCo :/

Dang, it's been waayyyy too long since I posted...oops!!! Sorry, the college life has got me up and running from dance parties to finals to warm weather to boys. Yep, I'm very very busy. But I decided to take a break from studying for my finals today and blog. Because I can't give up on this thing yet..haha.

Life has been so stressful. So many good and bad things have been happening.

Bad: My laptop broke down on Monday. RIGHT BEFORE FINALS AND WHEN I HAD TO WRITE AN ESSAY!!!
Good: I have great roomies that let me use their laptops and my wonderful father let me use another one of our family's laptops while he's fixing mine.

Bad: I have 3 finals this weekend. :(
Good: I'm gonna be home for the summer for good in a week and a day, and after Monday, I will be living a free life.

Bad: I get distracted WAY too easily.
Good: Because of this, I baked two cakes this weekend and cleaned our whole kitchen yesterday.

Bad: I am sooooo sore.
Good: I've been working out pretty regularly with BFF who's on the track team and I've been learning to hurdle and lift. I lifted 75 lbs yesterday! :D

Bad: I watched Glee instead of studying.
Good: I got to watch Glee!

Bad: I have work every morning at 7:50 and I'm soooooo tired.
Good: $$$$$

Bad: BOYS ARE DUMB!!! >:(
Good: I am single and loving it and partying every night with my best friends and having the time of life!!! Oh yeah! :D :D

Anyways, that's my life. This is how it goes. There are good and bad things, but it just depends on if I'm looking at the glass half full or half empty. I'm just gonna try as hard as I can to live my life free, happy, full of joy, and just for me! I would post pictures, but they're on my other laptop. So look at facebook for those...and if you're not my friend, then add me! :D
