this crazy busy LIFE

Holy moly life is CRAZY. It's really stressful, and though all the things causing me stress are good and I like them, stress is stress.

Like...the last day of classes is next Thursday! What?! How in the WORLD. did. that. happen. Sorry, I don't usually do sentences like that but it felt necessary. I'm scared because it still feels like I have so much to get done and am I going to get good enough grades to graduate and how can I do everything I need to do in a week and a half's time? Doesn't really seem possible.

On top of that are things like work (I'm doing a sweet project that I can't wait to tell you about soon!), doing my church callings, sewing for a fashion show that maybe I shouldn't have signed up for, and being addicted to Gilmore Girls (wait what?) haha (it's really so good!).

It's all so stressful and the only thing keeping me going is the fact that even though it all has to be done in a week and a half, that means it'll all be over in a week and a half. In which I will then breathe a sigh of relief.

Things I have to do in the next week and a half:
-finish Gracie's baptism dress
-successfully do all the costumes for this video I got hired to help with
-catch up on Stats (got 89% on my test the other day though, YES!)
-choreograph a 1 minute contemporary dance solo
-memorize a poem for my public speaking class
-write a public speaking critique
-study for my contemporary dance written test
-sew another project for my sewing class
-write a research proposal
-finish sewing a custom dress for a client
-finish helping my group with our research proposal and present it to the class
-get Christmas presents for all!
-decorate for Christmas (?)
-worry about if the boy I like likes me back haha
-PAY RENT

There might be more, and I realize you care about none of those but I'm posting this for my own sanity, just to put it out there.

Basically, I just need to tell myself I can do it. And then do it. GAH! Wish me luck! Blogging is a wild card for the next week and a half, so don't be surprised if I don't post again until after that.

last day.

it's been such a year, hasn't it?

i kind of had to hold back tears when I walked out the doors of the daycare on friday, knowing it would be my last time working there.

these kids have taught me so much..way more than I could ever have taught them. It's weird to think that even though I will always remember them, they won't remember me much or at all as they get older.

i'm really grateful for the past year, and for everything I've been able to do and learn. I'm excited for new things and changes, but man, will I miss these kids. I couldn't imagine a better place for me to have worked and better people and kids I could have known while taking time off school.

i love em :)

What Gets Me Out of Bed Every Day

So there is this very inspiring girl, Josie Thompson, who writes a blog over here. She's struggled immensely with bipolar and depression and if you want to read an inspirational story, you should definitely check it out. Josie's working on something called Project 444. It's to help herself and to help others. She packed up a few belongings and is roadtripping it up in her truck going from state to state, meeting people and asking them one simple question.."What gets you out of bed every day?" And she's not going home until she has 444 answers. You can read more about that here, and you should definitely go check out her blog and give her all the support you can. I don't know her personally, but I think she is doing a great thing and wish her the absolute best in it.

Reading Josie's blog, hearing that question, and seeing videos of answers people have given her got me thinking. What gets me out of bed every morning?

You'd think it'd be a pretty easy question to answer, but I thought about it for a while. The obvious answers came to my head first...my family, my closest friends, my love for fashion, my dream to meet Carrie Underwood in person one day (ha), etc... But as I thought about it more, I realized that it's all the little things that make up life that get me out of bed every day.

Every morning, I wake up and I have a choice. I can sleep in longer, I can skip work, and I can lie there not caring and not doing anything. There are so many days when that's all I want to do, just letting life pass by without me participating in it.

But every day, I make the latter choice. I get up out of bed for a job that I really like at a place where I enjoy getting to know my co-workers and the customers around me. I get up because I get to pick a cute new outfit from my closet or I get to lounge around in my favorite Carrie Underwood or Friends (the tv show) t-shirt. I get up because I love doing my makeup every morning. I love that every day, I look at my face, and I'm somehow still not bored with it; in fact, I still think I look pretty when I smile at myself in the mirror or put on makeup in the morning. I've done it hundreds of times and yet I still love it and I still love me.

I get up because I never know if that day might be the day I think of the next great fashion design, the day I laugh so hard I cry for fifteen minutes straight, or the day I might finally meet someone who I'll fall in love with (and more significantly, someone who will fall in love with me too). I get up because I might cross a bucket list item off with my roommates or have a crazy disaster that we'll laugh about later on for years to come. I get up in the morning because there might be someone I need to help that day, or maybe there's someone in the world who needs to help me.

I get up for all the little miracles I notice that God gives me in my life....someone bringing breakfast to work when I was running too late to bring some, finding a dollar bill on the ground, a little girl telling me she thinks I'm pretty and my heart feeling all tingly inside because it's been a long time since anyone has told me that, making it through a stop light right before it goes red, a text from my mom that makes me happy no matter what it's about because I miss her and my family, bonding with a coworker at my job, or even just meeting eyes with a really cute guy.

I don't know, I guess I just get up for life. Because life is so darn wonderful. It sucks too, don't get me wrong. We all know that I've been through so much damage in my life, and I'm sure you have too. But there are so many things every day that make life really great. And the next morning when I'm struggling to want to get out of bed, I think about the day before and some of the really nice little things that happened. Then I close my eyes for five more seconds, take a deep breath, and get up and flip my feet over the edge of my bed, ready to start a new day.

March Madness

March has been a pretty good month so far, there have been a lot of ward activities and there's been a lot of fun with my roommates, so I've really enjoyed it (I apologize for the low quality of some of these photos, as they were taken from my phone).

March 4th we had an Oscars night with our ward where each FHE group made a video and then we watched them all and had a little awards ceremony. I already posted the video we made the other day, but just in case you didn't see it or want to see it again, here it is:

We got all dressed up for it and brought a celebrity guest (who else but Carrie Underwood?!) along, all of which made for a very fun night. We even got swag bags at the end of it!
We had a great time trying to bring Carrie in the car ;)

I have been crazy busy working (from last Tuesday to Monday I worked 7 days in a row, 7 or 8 hours every day, so I was tired) but I've been trying to go to as many fun things as I can go to. I got to face paint with my aunt on Saturday (March 9th) at a fun little fair a preschool put on. This is the only picture I got but you can see more of what we do here. After that it was my roommate Talya's bridal shower, but I unfortunately had to miss it and go to work. Sad day. :(

Sunday I also had to work, which meant missing church and a fireside (once again, sad day) but it was a pretty awesome day because it was March 10th, Carrie Underwood's 30th birthday!! For years I have been wanting to throw a party for Carrie Underwood and this year, since we actually have the cardboard cutout and it was her 30th, I knew a party had to be thrown. I made cakes and my roommates kindly frosted them for me while I was at work and then a few people from our came over to sing, blow out candles, and eat the cake. Yep, Carrie did indeed blow (or flap) out her own candles. It was awesome.

Yes, I'm almost positive Carrie had a pretty swell birthday party. People probably think I'm crazy, but I love doing weird, fun things like that. Haha maybe someday I will actually get to meet Carrie Underwood and celebrate her birthday with her! That's the dream. (Also, I'm realizing now that the majority of the pictures on this post have included Carrie Underwood....but I'm not sorry. She's awesome.)

I have no pictures of this, but on Tuesday (March 12th), I watched the Bachelor finale with my roommates, yay! And (SPOILER) we were sooooooo happy he picked Catherine. Honestly, it didn't really look like he had great chemistry with either of the girls, but Lindsay was dang annoying and immature. Catherine was the clear choice all the way (see here--and if you do watch the Bachelor, this is a great blog for recaps. It's seriously hilarious to read.), though we did worry about Sean's judgment. I'm glad he picked her and they seem way cute together. As cheesy as it may be, I'm excited to see their televised wedding (if they make it that far, which I think they might) haha. And I'm so excited for Desiree to be the next Bachelorette! Let's face it, we all saw that coming, and we are now all waiting in anticipation for summer to come so that it can start. Ha. :)

Pi Day was on March 14th (3.14) so my ward had a pie party on the 13th where everyone brought delicious pies and then we all voted to see which ones were the best. I tried a bunch of them, and I have to say that they were all really good. Yay for pi(e) day!

I've been sick with a cold, which totally stinks. I get colds so often that I know the cycle they go through, sad huh? Day 1: sore throat that no amount of water can take away; day 2: achiness, overall sick feeling and just wanting to be in bed; day 3: runny/stuffy nose, and many of the same side effect from day 2, and going from feeling really hot to kind of cold; day 4: a nasty cough that comes with an aching chest and an itchy back (does your back itch when you cough, because mine does--but it itches from the inside so there's no way to get rid of it); day 5 and on: symptoms eventually get better. But seriously, no matter how much I get used to it, being sick will never be fun. :(

And in case you are wondering, I feel really good after sharing my post last Monday. It was one of the best things I ever could have done. I think with things like that, we build them up to be a lot worse than they actually are, and that was definitely the case with me. It feels so good to have it in the open though, like you'd never believe. Now that it's out in the open, I don't have to worry anymore about anyone finding out or me saying something that would give it away. I feel like I can just live life so much more carefree because of it. I think the best part about it all is that when anything about eating disorders or any trial, really, comes up, I can talk about and I can share my experience. I'm so excited about that. It's still fresh on my mind right now, so I may be discussing my feelings about sharing that or a little bit more of my experience, I hope that's okay! I think I'm still trying to get all my emotions out about it or just figure out what I'm feeling.

One more thing...shoutout to my roommate Kelsey today on her 22nd birthday!! (She's feelin' 22..) I can't wait to celebrate tonight. :)

Floating

Not being in school has been such an interesting experience. I can sleep in every day for as long as I want and then I realize that I have nothing to do and become productive. Today I did laundry, did the finishing touches on one of my fashion show garments, vacuumed my room, ironed and steamed my finished garments, and looked for jobs.

Tonight I did a quick grocery store run with my sister (sidenote: let me just say how much I love having her Provo. It's been really fun to have a sibling here) and then went to family home evening. I talked with people in my ward, made new friends, felt the spirit, and had fun playing a get-to-know-you game. And then I got home and worked on blog stuff (for another blog I'm starting with my friends soon).

There are a lot of things about not being in school that are difficult. The main one being the fact that my life plans changed and got postponed but everyone around me is still staying on course with their own. I feel like I'm being left behind, even though it's my fault I'm not moving forward right now.

But while not being in school has been somewhat of a tough and different adjustment, it's been really nice. I feel so stress-free, which I think is something I really needed. I know that this no school/no job situation won't last forever (I do need a job so I hope it ends soon actually) but while it is lasting, it's good. I kind of feel like I'm just floating along in life.

Today was nice. I'm happy. And I think my life is right on par for the course it's supposed to go in. :)

Halloween 2012 (part 2)

So although I've worked at the bookstore for about 3 and a half years, I've never actually dressed up for Halloween for it. They do a fun costume contest by department and I guess my supervisor or my coworkers never got into it so I didn't really care. This year we had a new supervisor though (in charge of men's and women's) so we combined forces with the men's department to do 101 dalmations (or like a tenth of it haha). It was awesome!

For the costumes, we got white hoodies and pants from DI and stuck spots all over them. My supervisor worked on cuttin out spots and making collars and ears that whole week. It turned out so good, as you can see above :) I also painted everyone's faces so that turned out pretty cute too.

People seriously loved our costumes! We all met up in the middle of the day to take pictures for the contest. We also decided to walk around the Wilk (the building that the bookstore's in) and outside of it. People were taking pictures with us and everyone was staring (in admiration) so it was really fun. And we got 3rd place in the costume contest! What?!!!

I have to say that this year's group of employees are my favorite ones so far. Everyone is so much fun and I feel like we'll be friends for a long time. I love my co-workers!

All the party details are coming up soon, don't you worry!

Happy [Late] St. Patricks Day

I have really been getting into doing the chalk signs at work. I've never felt like I'm a super artistic person, but artistic abilities seem to be showing through my chalk art (and I guess fashion is kind of an art in and of itself as well). These are the ones I did for St. Patrick's Day. It makes me happy whenever I complete a new sign, because I try to challenge myself and make every sign better than the last. Life is all about improving, even in the little things like chalk signs!

Why I Love My Job

I think one of the best things of my experience here at BYU has been working in the bookstore. I think for many reasons. The funny thing is, I didn't love my job there when I started as much as I love and appreciate it now...

I came to BYU as a young freshman girl and in obvious need of a job. I applied for the job at the bookstore and I also applied for another job on campus just cleaning tables and stuff in the Cougareat. I was offered the Cougareat job the same day as the interview, but I obviously wanted the bookstore job more, so I waited to find out about it. Funny enough, I'd actually applied for two different shifts in the bookstore, and when I called to find out about the job status, I think they only looked at one shift and told me I didn't get it. So naturally I called the other people and told them I wanted the job. Then, the first day my parents dropped me off, I was already feeling a little homesick and scared of being on my own. My friend Brooke was there and I went with her and her parents to get some groceries for her. Unexpectedly, I received a call from who else, but the Human Resources department at the bookstore letting me know I got the job! I was seriously so ecstatic and it was one of the first things that really made me excited to be at BYU.

Since then, I've gone from being the "baby" of the department to the one who's been there the longest (2 years and 8 months!). There have been a lot of changes in the store, from moving around departments and getting a new boss. But I have learned and grown so much through my job there as well. It's been the most constant thing that I've had since I started my schooling here and it's a great way to measure how much I have grown.

Through my job at the bookstore, I've become a lot more outgoing. It's interesting, because when I started working there, I was shy and didn't talk much to any of the other employees and didn't really put myself out there to customers. Mostly I kept to myself by folding clothes and keeping quiet. Even when the store was dead, I still wouldn't really go talk to any of the cashiers or anything. I just felt awkward and shy. I'm so different now, and I'm not saying it's been my job that has changed me, but it's a great way to see how I've changed. I greet pretty much every customer in my department, not really scared of what they will think of me or not anxious to talk to someone I don't know. When the store is dead, I find myself always talking to the other employees, and actually laughing and having fun with them. I'm so much bolder and more confident than before.

I've learned a lot of new skills that I didn't really know I had. Like I said, when I started, all I'd really do was fold and clean and do the basic things that anyone can really do. Now, I find myself always making wall displays (and enjoying it), doing really cool chalk signs, and taking initiative on different things around the department. Isn't that so cool?! I feel like I've gotten so many opportunities with this job and been able to find a lot of skills that I didn't realize I had. Isn't that interesting...it makes me wonder if this could happen with any job, if we just work hard, we might find things in ourselves that we didn't know we had.
One of the chalk signs I've done.

Probably my favorite part about working at the bookstore has been all the friends I've made and the people I've met. Some of my very best friends are bookstore employees. I feel like it's one of the places where I'm totally myself and where the people who know me there, truly know ME and who I am. I don know, whenever I go to work, I'm always happy because I'm around great people. Seriously, bookstore employees are awesome! Probably some of my favorite people in the world. I feel so blessed to be able to have so many friends that I love so much from a place that I love so much! It's just really great.
This picture wasn't taken at work, but these are two of my work friends, Jodie and Kirsten, who I love and wouldn't be as
close with if it weren't for working in the same place!

For me, the bookstore has become so much more to me than a job. It's a place where I can do things that I love and a place where I can laugh and be happy with people I love. I'm really grateful for it, and I think the biggest lesson that I've learned from this is the fact that it may take some time (I've worked here for almost three years) but everything deserves a chance. Give yourself a chance to warm up to an environment, because even if you're not the best in it or don't have a lot of friends there, things can change. Who knows, you might find something in yourself you didn't even know existed!! :)

Life This Past Month

I haven't been blogging week by week just because it hasn't been super exciting every week (though I would still like to do that in the future) but here are some highlights from the month.

It's been like a yearlong project from 2011 to decorate my room at home. It's not the same room I had when I was living at home and after all the switching around, everyone else's rooms looked pretty cute but mine was the guest room so it was kinda plain. One day when I was changing my bedspread (the one two pictures below) I liked how it matched the room and it inspired me to decorate the room into something cuter. It has light green and tan walls, so not the ideal colors I would have picked but I could work with them. It took me all year to do it because I'm poor and I only go home so much. But throughout the year I'd find things to decorate it with and I brought my barbies home to put up in the room as well. Over Christmas break I put up a lot of stuff and it is pretty finished now, although I'd like to put a mirror and a clock in it as well.

I didn't take any "before pictures" but here are some photos kind of from how it looked before:

And then after (the bed in the first picture isn't in the room anymore)!
It supposed to be sort of a fashion/ballet/barbie/girly themed room. I like it :) Oh and the quote above the window says, "A girl should be two things--classy and fabulous." -Coco Chanel.

I've spent bunches of time with my roommates this month as well. We watched Katie run in the home cross-country meet and cheered her on to the finish line.

I was on a date the night they did this, but Kelsey, Katie, and Heidi made these cute hats. I think this picture is pretty great haha.

We went to a birthday party for our wonderful friend, Brooke (back row with the blue shirt and white cardigan). Brooke is from our same hometown, was in our ward last year, and is rooming with our old roommate Katherine (on the far right, brown hair with gray button-up) so we see her a lot and love her tons!
Order (top to bottom, left to right): Heidi, Brooke, Kelsey, Katherine, me, Talya
My wonderfully awesome parents got me a tripod for Christmas so I've been going out a few times a week again to take pictures at fun places like deserted railroad tracks and stuff like that.

I hang out weekly with my friends Sarah, Lauren, and Alyne, and two weeks ago we had a nail-painting party. I didn't paint my nails but I did feel like organizing them by color!

My brother Cee Ryle has gymnastics meets starting up again. A lot of them are usually more south here in Utah county so I can meet my family and watch him, it's pretty fun! This meet was last week in Springville and he got two ribbons and a silver medal, which is awesome! I love my brother, he's getting to look so old.

I went to a men's volleyball friends with Cara and Kristy (in the middle), some of my work friends. Super fun! We left the game a little early because I had to write a talk that night and we were tired of standing but it was good to get together. We always talk a ton at work and stuff but it's exciting when we can go hang out and not have to worry about getting in trouble for talking. ;)

Work has been....crazy. To say the least. Read about it here. My old boss got laid off, and the way I found out was from one of my coworkers texting me and I didn't even get to say goodbye. Really sad. :( It was weird going to work last Monday realizing I had no boss. It's turned out pretty well though, because the men's department supervisor is now ours as well. We already knew him before and he's really nice and a good boss, so it's working out nicely, thank goodness! It was an interesting adjustment though. We've been getting rid of a lot of stuff and trying to get ready for inventory. And when I have time, my favorite thing to do at work is chalk signs. I take pictures in case I ever need them for a portfolio one day..

Just on Saturday I got to go to Sundance film festival with my old roommate Chelsey, our friend Shirley from our freshman ward, and Chelsey's friend Whitney. It was super fun! Unfortunately, it was the second to last day so a lot of the Sundance stuff in Park City had closed down. We saw two films, Wuthering Heights and Price Check, in SLC, and they were definitely interesting. Maybe if I wasn't Mormon I'd like them more, but there was a lot of swearing in the movies so it wasn't ideal. Still fun though. I only got like one picture from the whole thing though..slacking!

So that has been the month of January! A crazy month with lots of exciting stuff. School is keeping me busy as well. My favorite class is probably Intermediate Sewing but I love my other ones too--Marriage Prep, Clothing History, and Statistics. It's off to class now so have a beautiful rest of your Monday everyone!
